In my search for an answer to the question” What makes countries successful in football”, I started in the first article with the conclusion that the the way football is organized makes a big difference.
The successful countries have a thriving club structure and do not rely on the school system to develop the sport.
In succesful countries, small or large, there is always a stream of talents that comes through and is able to compete at the highest level. They have developed all the instruments required for top level football. In football that means technical ability, physical strength, tactical insight and the motivation and passion to become the best.
I believe that everywhere in the world there is potential football talent. Boys or girls born with natural talent for sport in general.
The importance and popularity of a particular sport will determine which way the talented individual will go. Continue reading →
It is now more then one and a half years since I left the Netherlands to work abroad. First I went to Indonesia to become the technical director of the Indonesian FA. This was a different role in football compared to head coach. I am always interested to gain more knowledge and better insights in the secret of successful teams or organizations. In my new role I was automatically forced to look deeper in to these successes and what was the basis for it.
In my search I looked at countries like Germany, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and the South American powerhouses like Brazil, Argentina and lately Chile. And also the opposite, how is it possible that big and ambitious countries like England, America and the Asian countries where football is highly popular cannot make the last step to the worlds elite. Ik ben nu drie weken in Indonesië werkzaam als technisch directeur voor de Indonesische voetbalbond (PSSI), met als basis Jakarta.
Ik heb een intensieve periode gehad met veel ontmoetingen en gesprekken over de staat van het voetbal hier. Wat mij treft is de passie waarop men over voetbal spreekt. Men is enorm hongerig naar succes en hoopvol dat dit land ooit een rol kan gaan spelen in Azië. Op dit moment is dit nog lang niet het geval. De kwaliteit van wedstrijden en spelers is matig. Vooral het samenspel en het maken van de juiste keuzes is een groot probleem. Inzet en energie is er echter genoeg. Continue reading →
Het seizoen is weer een aantal wedstrijden onderweg. Het is voor mij als voetbaltrainer interessant om de ontwikkelingen op de voet te volgen. Ik ben altijd benieuwd met welk plan een team aan de competitie begint en ook hoelang ze hierin blijven geloven. Het is voor mij goed in te schatten wat de gedachten van de coach zijn, waar hij de prioriteiten legt.
De coach moet dus een keuze maken tussen goals scoren en goals voorkomen.
In Moskou werd voor de zesde keer om de Legends Cup gespeeld in een toernooi waar ex-internationals vooral elkaar willen laten zien dat ze nog steeds kunnen voetballen 🙂
Dit jaar deden er zes teams mee: Oekraine, Duitsland, Italië, Portugal, Rusland en Nederland. Voor mij was het de tweede keer dat ik mee kon doen. Bij de allereerste editie was ik er ook bij.
Het toernooi wordt gespeeld in een ijshockey stadion. De teams bestaan uit 5 spelers en een keeper, waarbij de wedstrijden 2×20 minuten duren. Bij de eerste editie werd het hele ijshockeyveld gebruikt met boarding, de afmetingen waren toen wel iets te groot. Gelukkig is de veldgrootte tegenwoordig aangepast maar wordt de boarding nog wel gebruikt.
De opzet van het toernooi is dat het publiek leuke wedstrijden van oude sterren ziet en uiteraard dat Rusland uiteindelijk wint. Dat is ook dit jaar weer aardig gelukt. Rusland versloeg een zeer jong Portugal in de finale.
Verder is het sociale aspect een belangrijke factor. Je komt veel spelers tegen waar je mee of tegen gespeeld hebt. Het is dan logisch dat alle oude verhalen dan weer uit de oude doos worden gehaald. Hoewel we sportief niet ver zijn gekomen (6e) was het toch een mooie gebeurtenis om bij aanwezig te zijn.
