I can say that I am a typical product of the Dutch football school. I grew up with and was influenced by the people who have largely determined the football landscape in the Netherlands: Johan Cruijff, Rinus Michels, Louis van Gaal, Guus Hiddink, Wiel Coerver and Raymond Verheijen. My whole life I am busy with and interested in all topics related to football. Besides being a player and trainer, I have been active as technical director, youth and assistant trainer. Furthermore, as a board member of the CBV, I was responsible for the football technical matters for a number of years. Ik ben opgegroeid in de tijd dat Nederland mee ging doen met de wereld top. Onder impuls van de visionairs Michels en Cruijff werd een nieuwe spectaculaire manier van voetballen ontwikkeld dat Totaal Voetbal werd genoemd. Deze manier van spelen vereiste een technische allround speler die op meerdere posities kan spelen. Wiel Coerver, een andere visionair ontwikkelde hiervoor zijn eigen methodiek om deze spelers te ontwikkelen. Zijn visie kreeg overal op de wereld veel navolging.

In my search for an answer to the question” What makes countries successful in football”, I started in the first article with the conclusion that the the way football is organized makes a big difference.
The successful countries have a thriving club structure and do not rely on the school system to develop the sport.
In succesful countries, small or large, there is always a stream of talents that comes through and is able to compete at the highest level. They have developed all the instruments required for top level football. In football that means technical ability, physical strength, tactical insight and the motivation and passion to become the best.
I believe that everywhere in the world there is potential football talent. Boys or girls born with natural talent for sport in general.
The importance and popularity of a particular sport will determine which way the talented individual will go. Continue reading →
It is now more then one and a half years since I left the Netherlands to work abroad. First I went to Indonesia to become the technical director of the Indonesian FA. This was a different role in football compared to head coach. I am always interested to gain more knowledge and better insights in the secret of successful teams or organizations. In my new role I was automatically forced to look deeper in to these successes and what was the basis for it.
In my search I looked at countries like Germany, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and the South American powerhouses like Brazil, Argentina and lately Chile. And also the opposite, how is it possible that big and ambitious countries like England, America and the Asian countries where football is highly popular cannot make the last step to the worlds elite. Pieter Huistra moet voor structuur zorgen bij Indonesische voetbalbond
JAKARTA Pieter Huistra (49) was ruim vier jaar geleden met FC Groningen koploper van de eredivisie, maar daarna kwam de klad er in. Sinds kort is hij technisch directeur van de Indonesische voetbalbond.
Dat was een verrassende keuze, Indonesië. ,,Ik begrijp dat mensen dat denken. Ik wilde graag weer aan de slag en het verhaal van de Indonesische bond sprak me aan hoewel het voetbal hier geen goede naam had. Er waren twee rivaliserende bonden, maar onlangs is schoon schip gemaakt. Met één organisatie slaan ze een andere weg in. Nieuwe, jonge mensen moeten het vertrouwen in de voetbalbond herstellen. Dit is een goed moment om in te stappen.’’
Ik werd deze ochtend gebeld door een journalist van een dagblad.
Hij vroeg of ik mee wilde doen aan een poll onder oud- internationals over de positie van de bondscoach. Hij had twee vragen. “Eén over de korte termijn en één over de nabije toekomst.”

Wat ik in mijn vooruitblik op de afgelopen WK al voorspelde is uitgekomen: Onze oosterburen zijn wereldkampioen. Duitsland is het eerste Europese land dat in Zuid Amerika de titel in de wacht heeft gesleept. Na een spannende finale wisten ze Argentinië in de verlenging te verslaan. Als liefhebber en overtuigd aanhanger van het voetbal uit de Hollandse school ben ik blij dat juist de ploeg die volgens deze principes voetbalt, het toernooi heeft gewonnen. Mijn gevoel heeft me niet in de steek gelaten maar toch ben ik benieuwd hoe deze overwinning ook met statistieken* is te verklaren.
Een oude voetbalwijsheid zegt dat een wereldkampioen vooral in de verdediging een goede basis moet hebben. Dit is met simpele cijfers te verklaren. Continue reading →
